Where In the World Is Dr. Santiago?
Several years back, there was an extremely popular software game called Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Originally the game focused on teaching geography and history. It had a catchy name. It was educational. It became popular.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to ‘our version’ of Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego.
Many of you know that a couple months ago, my doctor and his staff were elected by their overseers at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA, to be shut down, due to lack of funding from Medicare. Over 800 patients who were cared for by this outstanding specialist were left hanging. Due to legalities, he and his staff were unable to comment or answer questions regarding his future plans.
So, here’s what I want to do…
I am in limbo. I don’t know one neurosurgeon from the next in the area I now live in. I know I am not the only one in this predicament. There are many people seeking a quality neurologist and/or movement disorder specialist. Scanning the columns in the phone book doesn’t give you an idea of whether the doctor your finger lands on is quality or not.
If you currently see a neurologist and/or a movement disorder specialist that you consider quality, how about sharing? Please use the comment box and leave their name and city/state and a couple sentences as to why you’d recommend this physician.
People move, doctors leave, etc. and to find a new specialist can be frustrating. I will compile a list of physicians that you think give great care to their patients who continue to battle a movement disorder or neurological disease.
And, if anyone knows where in the world Dr. Anthony Santiago is now practicing – inquiring minds want to know.
Leave information in the comment box. Please include doctor’s name, city and state (complete address would be better, including phone number), reason why you would recommend this physician.
Thanks for the input!
Sherri

Thanks Nancy – we’ll keep everyone posted as best we can. So far, no ‘positive’ news on Dr. Santiago relocating nearby (Northwest).

I too saw Dr. Santiago for a rare movement disorder that other movement disorder specialists seem to not even know about. Needless to say, he is much missed and I was wondering if there were any updates. The doctor I had to go see when Dr. Santiago had to close down was the polar opposite of Dr. S.–virtually no personality or compassion. Dr. Santiago also told me he was heading to the East Coast for awhile for personal reasons, but wondering again if there is news since first of year. I know some of the people above would have posted something, but we people with movement disorders get a little “restless” sometimes……..Thanks for any info, Nancy

I have known Dr. Santiago for a long time, and I was also one of many patients that had to go else where for such treatment due to his funding issues. However, I do know he is in NY he is not in practice at this time he is taking care of personal issues I am not going to comment on what it is he is tending to but to say he is going to be back soon. Once he takes care of “private” things he loves the Northwest and he is a close colleague to my family having been in business and associated with my family we for see him being back within the year either in Spokane or Seattle area. All his staff, Brenda, and so forth are also well missed.

I wish Dr Santiago well and hope he reopens practice in Washington State. I was diagnosed with PD at age 43 in 1993. I know of no other MD in Spokane who has anywhere near the comprehensive understanding of PD as Dr Santiago. He helped me find out that some of the meds for PD (side effects) are about as bad as the disease. He prescribed one med for me not generally used for PD in America, but used in Europe. This med has been very helpful.

Kathy – If I hear anything, I’ll let you know. Thank you for doing the same. You just can’t get a better doctor.

Dear Sherri,
I too would like to know where Dr. Santiago has relocated to. Rumor has it that he may have or is planning to move to the Disorder Clinic in Kirkland and possibly take a teaching position at the University of Washington. But this is only rumor and cannot be substantiated at this time. I and several others that I know would be more than happy to drive to the coast to see him. I will bookmark this website and as soon as I hear anything I would be happy to post it here.
Also, I have spoken several times with one of the Parkinson’s Research Board of Directors and she has said a number of times that if she hears anything more about his whereabouts she will let me know. She was also one of his patients and would like to be again.
I haven’t spoken with her in about 3 weeks now but I will call her some time in the next week and ask if she has any information yet.
As far as a new Dr. goes, I have seen another neurology Dr here in town and all I can say is, I am still looking for Dr. Santiago to let us know where he is and I will go to him. So for me this is temporary. During the interim I have been having my meds refilled by my Family Practice Dr.
I hope this helps, but I will report anything at all that I hear.
Kathy
